Every night, your brain runs a repeating program with four distinct stages — and each stage does a different job. Understanding these stages explains why when you wake up can matter as much as how long you sleep, and why our sleep calculator counts in 90-minute cycles.
A complete sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes on average (real cycles range from about 80 to 120 minutes) and contains four stages. A typical night includes four to six full cycles.

Light sleep is the on-ramp. In stage 1 — just a few minutes long — you hover between wakefulness and sleep. In stage 2, your body settles in: heart rate slows, body temperature drops, and brain activity shows short bursts called sleep spindles, which researchers link to learning and memory. Light sleep sounds unimportant, but it makes up nearly half your night and it's the stage from which waking feels easiest. That's the whole trick behind cycle-based alarm timing.
Deep sleep (also called slow-wave sleep) is when the physical maintenance happens: tissue repair, muscle growth, immune-system strengthening, and the brain's own waste-clearing process. It's also the hardest stage to wake from — if an alarm drags you out of deep sleep, you get that heavy, disoriented feeling known as sleep inertia, which can linger for 30 minutes or more.
Deep sleep is front-loaded: your first two or three cycles of the night contain the most of it. This is one reason consistently cutting sleep short is worse than it sounds — you protect deep sleep, but sacrifice most of your REM.
REM stands for rapid eye movement — your eyes dart around behind closed lids while most of your body is temporarily paralyzed. Brain activity during REM looks surprisingly close to being awake. This is when most vivid dreaming happens, and research links REM to memory consolidation, learning, creativity, and emotional regulation.
REM is back-loaded: the longest REM periods come in the final cycles of the night, in the early morning hours. Cut your night from 8 hours to 6 and you don't lose 25% of your REM — you can lose most of it, because you've amputated exactly the cycles where REM dominates.
At the end of each cycle, you briefly surface toward light sleep before starting the next one. Wake during that window and you feel relatively clear-headed; wake mid-cycle — especially from deep sleep — and you feel groggy even after a long night. That's the entire logic of cycle-based sleep timing: aim your alarm at the end of a cycle, not the middle.
